I can hadle it
I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate”.
Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.
我能挺过去的

第一届英语演讲大赛章程规则 篇二
Regulations of the 1st English Speaking Contest
Jinling Institute of Technology
一、活动目的：提高我校学生英语口语水平，培养他们的英语演讲技能，并选拔2名CCTV杯英语演讲比赛复赛选手。
1. PURPOSE: The contest is organized annually to promote spoken English proficiency of students of our institute, develop their English speaking skills, and select TWO contestants to compete in the quarter of “CCTV Cup” English Speaking Contest.
二、大赛程序：大赛分三个阶段进行，即初赛、复赛及决赛。
3. GENERAL PROCEDURE: The contest will go through three phases, namely, the first-round, the second-round and the final.
三、参赛资格：全校所有在籍学生都可自愿报名参加初赛； 初赛胜出的32名选手可参加决赛；复赛成绩前12名选手可参加决赛。
2. ELIGIBILITY: All enrolled students in our institute are eligible to compete in the first-round. 32 winners will contest in the second-round, among whom 12 will stand out to speak in the final.
四、大赛环节：
4. CONCRETE STEPS:
1、演讲次序：赛前30分钟选手参加抽签以决定演讲次序。
1）Delivery order: The order is decided by an organized draw 30 minutes before the contest.
2、定题演讲：根据预先给定标题Are Books Going Out of Style?脱稿演讲，稿件自备，时间3分钟。
2）Prepared speech: Contestants deliver their 3-minute prepared speeches without reference to their scripts, on the given title Are Books Going Out of Style?
3、即兴演讲：演讲题目在前一位选手进行演讲前由选手抽选，演讲时间为2分钟。
3）Impromptu speech: The speech title is to be chosen just before the performance of the previous contestant. The speech time is supposed to be 2 minutes.
4、回答提问：外教提出2个问题，选手有10秒钟的思考时间，回答问题不得少于30秒钟。
4）Prompt answer: The question master will ask two questions. Contestants are given 10 seconds to think before reply. The reply to either question in turn has to cover at least 30 seconds.
五、评分标准：
5. JUDGING CRITERIA:
1、内容要求（30%）：主题鲜明、结构清晰、中心突出，阐释充分、证据相关、逻辑性强，内容生动、能吸引听众注意力。
1）Content (30%): The speech is structured around a purpose, and this structure must include an opening, body and conclusion. The speaker has a responsibility to say something meaningful and original to the audience.
2、语言要求（20%）：使用标准英国英语或美国英语，语音清晰准确，语言流利、语调运用得当，措辞准确、句式多样，适当使用修辞手段。
2）Language (20%): Language should promote clear understanding of thoughts and should fit the occasion precisely. Proper use of grammar and correct pronunciation will show that the speaker is the master of the words being used.
3、技巧要求（50%）：有幽默感，手势、眼神接触与身体语言运用合理，表现自然、自信，有感情、节奏和感染力。
3）Delivery (50%): The speaker's appearance should reinforce the speech. Body language should support points through gestures, expressions, and body positioning. The speech sound should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and volume. The speaker should speak with enthusiasm and assurance, showing interest in the audience and confidence in their reactions.
4、时间要求：演讲时间必须控制在规定时间上下15秒之间，否则酌情扣分。
4) Time: Duration of the speech should be 15 seconds around the required time. Failure to meet the requirement will result in the deduction of points.
六、评委组成：初赛和复赛至少有5位评委；决赛评委不少于7人，包括2名外籍教师（主席评委和同分评委各一名）。
3. JUDGING PANEL: At least 5 judges have to be present in the first-round and second-round contests. The Panel in the final is composed of 2 foreign judges (a chief judge and a tie-breaking judge) and 5 Chinese judges.
六、计分计时：
6. COUNTING & TIMING:
1、计分：选手的最后得分为除去最高分和最低分的其他五个打分的'平均值。
1）Counting: The final score is the averaged calculation of five other scores, excluding the highest and lowest scores.
2、计时：选手演讲时间为3分钟（准备）/2分钟（即兴），第三/二分钟前15秒工作人员将举牌提示剩下30秒，第三/二分钟后15秒将响铃提示演讲超时。
2）Timing: Each contestant has 3 (prepared) or 2 (impromptu) minutes to deliver her or his speech. 15 seconds before the 3rd/2nd minute, a cardboard will be raised as a signal that there is 30 seconds left. Then, 15 seconds after the 3rd/2nd minute, a bell will ring to let the speaker know that the time has run out.
七、奖项设置：一等一等奖2名，奖励价值200元的奖品，并参加10月份江苏省赛区复赛；二等奖4名，奖励价值150元的奖品；三等奖6名，奖励价值100元的奖品；优秀奖20名。
7. AWARDS: There will be 2 first prize winners, to be awarded the qualification for the quarter of “CCTV Cup” English Speaking Contest; 4 second prize winners, 6 third prize winners, and 20 fourth prize winners.
八、活动经费： 大赛活动经费由金陵科技学院教务处和外国语学院联合赞助。
8. FUNDS: The contest is jointly funded by the Teaching Affairs Office and School of Foreign Studies, Jinling Institute of Technology.

Facing all kinds of risks(not because they neglect them, but mainly because they have the courage)， and shouldering the responsibilities, they march forward, bravely and cautiously. They are risking their luck and their lives as well. They have neither time nor energy to comment on others. While attentively planning the future, they devote themselves wholly in hard work, leaving the embroidered stories and malicious gossips flying in the air. The commenting ones, however, usually work less, and even if they want to work sometimes, they simply are not capable enough. They are no better than anyone, but show admiration to nobody either. They blame either the heaven, or the earth, but never themselves. They dare not to take any risks, but they are also afraid of any hard work. They are gossip-mongers, making stories and spreading rumors, making you feel annoyed and upset. It's not because that you have hurt them, or disturbed them, or hindered them, but because you are working. If only you are working, he is there commenting. Everything is hard at the beginning. You have just started a new cause, needing encouragement and support, yet he is there pouring a jar of cold water or blowing a gust of chilly wind, making you worried or perplexed. But once you have succeeded, he is there again sharing your success without feeling a little ashamed of the discouragement he had given you.

They not only enjoyed compliments but also suffered slanders from all over the world.
When commenting on what's right and what's wrong, the commenting ones themselves don't really know what is wrong and what is right. They are simply demanding perfection. When criticizing the others' inability, they themselves are actually unable to do anything, but simply pretending that they know better. This can well be compared with the actors and spectators. A new program is always followed by large amounts of criticism from the spectators. But if a spectator is given a chance to perform, a disaster will surely happen. Diners are always commenting on the skills of the chefs while readers are always criticizing the writers. Another case in point is the forty-chapter sequel of A Dream of the Red Mansions , which were written by Gao E who did a nearly perfect job. Nevertheless there are always such people who claim to be the experts on the novel, criticizing the latter forty chapters as a wretched sequel to a fine work. What if we ask them to write the sequel? I'm afraid they can only make it worse. It's easier said than done.
Capable and wealthy people are always the focus of the society.
Capable people are usually marching ahead of others and may not be properly understood, hence causing various kinds of comments, more criticism but less support;Capable people can easily succeed, thus causing both admiration and comments, more jealousy but less appreciation (only their good luck is recognized);Capable people can be sought for help and attract the attention of the society, thus causing a lot of comments, more complaints but less gratitude (even though they didn't ask anyone for help, if only they were not able to help others in a satisfactory way, it's already their fault);Capable people can also suffer setbacks (some even experience ups and downs many times)， experiencing fully the warmth and coldness of the human world, more hurts but less helps.
Wealthy people are non the easier. No doubt there are cruel-hearted rich men, but it is also wrong to think that no wealthy people are kind-hearted. They are capable of devising and managing and they often need to take risks to get the chance. But who care about these?
Whenever a group are dining or entertaining, everyone will take it for granted that the rich should pay the bill instead of going Dutch. If the rich doesn't pay, then he'll definitely be regarded as a miser;
Among good friends and relatives, the rich should often help the poor, otherwise he will surely be blamed for his cruel-heartedness;

Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair. “Am I destined to take the back seat to others?” Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. The customs of worshipping deities and ancestors remains even though the ceremonies are not as grand as before. It is also the time that spring is coming, so people held all kinds of ceremonies to welcome it.
There are many legends about Spring Festival in Chinese culture. In folk culture, it is also called “guonian” (meaning “passing a year”). It is said that the “nian” (year) was a strong monster which was fierce and cruel and ate one kind of animal including human being a day. Human beings were scared about it and had to hide on the evening when the “nian” came out. Later, people found that “nian” was very scared about the red color and fireworks. So after that, people use red color and fireworks or firecrackers to drive away “nian”。 As a result, the custom of using red color and setting off fireworks remains.
Preparing the New Year starts 7 days before the New Year’s Eve. According to Chinese lunar calendar, people start to clean the house on Dec. 24, butcher on Dec. 26th and so on. People have certain things to do on each day. These activities will end Jan. 15th of the lunar calendar.

mistic. When we encounter difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you will have no courage even to face them, how can you conquer them? Thus, be optimistic, ladies and gentlemen, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.”
Ladies and Gentlemen, keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there’s always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success. Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind to enumerate. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not illuminate the whole world. Alfred Nobel is optimistic; if not, the explosives and the prestigious Nobel Prize would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour De France.
A rose may be beautiful, or maybe not; that depends on your attitude only, and so does success, so does life. Hindrances and difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes on your long way to the throne of success; they are more bridges than obstacles! Now I prefer to end my speech with the great British poet Shelley’s lines: “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” Thank you!
